At the end of May we were all together to celebrate my husband's birthday. Those present were my husband Jay and I of course, our daughter Ashley, our son Austin, and our daughter and son-in-law Chelsea and Tyler.
Chelsea came over with a small black gift box and said that it was a gift for both my husband and I for Mother's Day and Father's Day. I didn't really have any ideas as to what it could be, but I figured it had to be something relatively inexpensive since we always told the kids not to spend a lot of money on gifts for us.
I opened the box and it was stuffed with green shredded paper. when I removed some of it I saw a little stuffed pig. Now we do raise pigs, and I have a couple of little stuffed pigs for decoration in our camper. My first thought was why would she see something like this and think "hey I'll give this to mom and dad"? As I pulled it out I tried to be as sincere as I could be and say thank you, but Chelsea could tell the confusion on my face. She told me to keep looking in the box, so I pulled a little more shredded tissue out and I saw a little pacifier. I must be honest, it took a little bit for me to catch on.
As the realization of what I was looking at, a stuffed pig (when I shook it, I found out it was actually a rattle) and a pacifier hit me, I looked up at Chelsea who was grinning from ear to ear and I just asked one simple question:
"Are you serious?"
"Chelsea, are you serious? Don't play with me! Seriously?" The smile on her face let me know she was very serious and not playing a joke. At that point the room erupted in cheers and congratulations and hugs and happiness with all of us, followed by sharing the picture of our new grandchild's first sonogram.
Then came the news "But you guys have to keep it a secret". Ummm, what? You just gave me the news that I'm going to be a grandmother for the very first time, and you expect me to keep that a secret? That's just so cruel!
Chelsea explained that she was at eight weeks at that point, but they did not want to tell other people until she had finished her first trimester, so that way in the event something tragic were to happen she wouldn't have to explain it to anyone but immediate family. I completely understood given the fact that my twin girls started as triplets and I miscarried one of them. But understanding does not mean it was going to be easy for me to contain my excitement.
When the time came that they announced to the world on Facebook that they were expecting, they did it in such a cute way. Tyler is an avid hunter, with his favorite being duck hunting. So they both put on camo gear and waders and went to a pond where he likes to hunt. Ashley took pictures of them and when they posted the pictures, they stated "We are adding a new little duckling to our flock". How cute is that and how cute are these pictures?
